Welcome to Journey Business Accounting.

I am Crystal Baze, CPA, founder and Managing Director of Journey Business Accounting, or JBA. I created JBA to provide small businesses and nonprofit organizations with something that is often missing from traditional accounting services: financial guidance that is practical, understandable, and connected to where the organization is trying to go.

Accounting should do more than document what happened last month or prepare a business for tax season. When it is done well, accounting helps leaders make informed decisions, identify risks, plan for growth, and move forward with confidence.

That is the work we do at JBA.

Who We Are

Journey Business Accounting is a CPA-led accounting and advisory firm based in Baltimore, Maryland. We provide bookkeeping, accounting, payroll coordination, financial reporting, grant accounting, internal control development, tax compliance support, and strategic financial advisory services.

We work primarily with small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and construction companies. Although these organizations may operate in different industries, they often face similar challenges.

Their financial records may be behind. Their reports may not provide the information they need. Their systems may have developed without a clear structure. Their leaders may be making important decisions without having anyone available to explain what the numbers mean.

JBA helps bridge that gap.

Our team combines accounting knowledge, technology, standardized processes, and personal support to help clients establish reliable financial systems. We do not simply enter transactions and distribute reports. We help clients understand their financial position and use that information to make better decisions.

Why I Started JBA

My journey in accounting did not begin when I became a CPA. I have worked with individuals and small businesses through JB & Associates since 2006.

Over the years, I saw how frequently small organizations struggled to receive the level of accounting support they truly needed. Many business owners could find someone to prepare a tax return or reconcile a bank account. Far fewer could find someone who would help them understand their reports, improve their systems, prepare for funding, manage grant requirements, or think through a major financial decision.

After completing the CPA licensing process, I decided to refocus that experience and create a firm that more clearly reflected my passion.

Journey Business Accounting was built to support organizations that are growing, changing, or simply trying to regain control of their financial operations. I wanted to create a firm that could meet clients where they are, strengthen the foundation beneath them, and help them prepare for what comes next.

The name “Journey” reflects that purpose.

Every organization is on a financial journey. Some are just getting started. Some are expanding. Some are recovering from years of incomplete records or inconsistent systems. Others are preparing for an audit, applying for funding or bonding, managing new grants, hiring employees, or planning for long-term growth.

Wherever a client begins, our goal is to help them move forward.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is simple: accounting should be accurate, useful, and understandable.

Accuracy is essential, but accuracy alone is not enough. A financial report has limited value when the person receiving it does not understand what it says or how to use it.

That is why education is a central part of our work.

We believe business owners and nonprofit leaders should be able to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. They should understand where their money is going, what their reports are showing, and which financial issues require their attention.

We also believe in building systems that can grow with the organization. A process that works for a new business may not work when that business adds employees, receives a major contract, or begins managing restricted funding. Accounting systems must evolve as the organization evolves.

JBA focuses on relationships, consistency, and long-term financial health. We respect the traditional principles of sound accounting while using modern tools and automation to make the work more efficient.

Technology can improve a process, but it cannot replace professional judgment, clear communication, or accountability.

Introducing Crunch & Munch

Crunch & Munch is JBA’s new educational series for business owners, nonprofit leaders, and other professionals who want to become more comfortable with accounting and financial management.

The concept is straightforward: We will Crunch the numbers while enjoying something to Munch on.

Each session will focus on a practical topic that affects small organizations. We may discuss financial statements, budgeting, cash flow, grant compliance, payroll, internal controls, tax preparation, business growth, or other areas that commonly create confusion.

These sessions are designed to be useful and conversational. You do not need an accounting background to participate. You also do not need to arrive with perfectly organized books or a list of technical questions.

Come ready to learn, share your experiences, and ask the questions you may have been hesitant to ask elsewhere.

Each Crunch & Munch session will generally include:

- A short presentation on the month’s topic

- Practical examples and explanations

- Action steps you can apply within your organization

- Time for open questions and discussion

- An opportunity to connect with other local professionals

The goal is not to turn every participant into an accountant. The goal is to help you become a more informed and confident financial decision-maker.
